Fifty Shades of Black

There’s something about the color black that acts as a gravitational pull on me. My latest shopping endeavors have resulted in the accumulation of more black pieces for my wardrobe. My closet is color-coordinated and the color black dominates about half of my closet. I know I’m not the only one who loves wearing black so I decided to take a closer look into why black is so popular in the fashion world.

The obsession with the color black in fashion has been around since the 14th century, due to the the restriction of colorful clothing reserved only for nobility. Since then, black has planted itself inside the fashion coor palatte and has never left. The color black has traditionally symbolized something solemn, reserved for funerals and formal events in the Western culture. While black is certainly still linked to its traditions, it’s also edgy and authoritative. It represents rebellion but also sophistication, simplicity but also complexity. It’s even played its role in politics as it was the color choice for Italian fascism.

A few beautiful quotes from famous designers  concerning the color:

“Black is the liaison which connects art and fashion ”
Yves Saint Laurent

“Black is the quintessence of simplicity and elegance”
Gianni Versace

Here are some of my favorite black looks:

To put in fewer words:
Black is chic, black is simple, black is versatile.
Black is timeless.
